So many years, decades and centuries have passed and yet a play written by the best dramatist in the world - William Shakespeare , is relevant today. "Romeo and Juliet" may have things that can not possibly exist today but so many people nowadays fail to realize the significance it has. It is unbelievable how, after hundreds of years , the popularity of this play is still booming. The reason why I believe this is true is that Shakespeare almost predicted that the problems his characters encountered in the play would still be around today. The main reason why people still love this play is because they can relate to problems Romeo and Juliet went through.
In "Romeo and Juliet" there are many themes. The main of them are love, life, death, rivalry, fate, and destiny. These themes are commonly used today. For example, love. Love is the main and the most important theme in the play. Nowadays, love is what most of the stories contain. "Romeo and Juliet" is definitely a role model for any other contemporary story.
Romeo and Juliet were clearly inlove with each other but were forced to hide their love because of the feud their families were in. They feared the reactions they would receive from their families if they told them the truth , if they told them they were so deeply inlove. This is so common in our society today - young couples disguising their love for fear of the reactions of their families and friends. They fear the reactions they would receive so they continue their relationship secretly. Everything I have discussed about the love os Romeo and Juliet is still relevant today. People still fall inlove , still fear how their loved ones would react from their loved ones , still try to cover up their relationships.
Romeo and Juliet were in the middle of a feud between their own families - the Capulets and Montagues. These two families hated each other so much that finding out about the relationship that was going on between Romeo and Juliet could lead to war. That was the main reason they did not tell their parents about the love they had. So hate and rivalry are another themes in "Romeo and Juliet" and when they occur it was not a pretty sight. These themes are still relevant today. People nowadays are still fighting for meaningless reasons. The Capulets and the Montagues had hated each other from an ancient feud that could have dated back a hundreds of years. It was almost like a tradition they had to follow. Unfortunately , this type of hate is still apparent today.
Romeo and Juliet`s untimely death could be down to a number of things - for example ,the feud affected their relationship, which played a huge part in their deaths. But I do believe it was entirely down to fate. Romeo and Juliet meet entirely by fate and immediately fall inlove. They begin a relationship plagued with bad luck and then tragically they both die. I believe their lives had been planned and there is nothing they could do to change the curse of their destiny. It is obvious that Shakespeare had intended everything for a reason and decided the fate would rule their lives.
Despite all the things "Romeo and Juliet" was written for an audience much earlier than today`s. Jet the play is still remade for films all the time. The directors may choose to do this in order to incorporate its well-known themes into something that is even more relevant to the younger audiences. Turning the story into one set in modern times changes in from 16th century love story into something that could happen anyday to anyone. It makes it even more reliable for modern viewers.
We should continue to study "Romeo and Juliet" because in the way Shakespeare wrote it we get to know the culture he was living in , where honour and loyalty to your family were one of the most important things. We see it by the way Romeo and Juliet can not see each other because they have to set the honour and loyalty to their families in front of their deep and strong love. Even though the play is written in a really different time and culture , we can still recognize the same problematic cases in our time. Another reason for studying "Romeo and Juliet" is that we learn valuable moral lessons , like : love conquers all , and you should not be fooled by prejudice and hate. If the families of Romeo and Juliet have stood up to these moral lessons there would not be a tragic ending.
In conclusion , "Romeo and Juliet" is still relevant to today`s literature, drama, films and even current events. Human behavior is not changed throughout the ages. Parental ambition , feuding among families and young love , which often ends in tragedy, are part of today`s world. Although "Romeo and Juliet" is written a hundreds of years ago , its timeless themes and memorable characters make it a story that will be retold for generations to come.
